Formula Nitro: Bacterial Supplement for Ammonia Reduction in Wastewater Treatment Plants

  • Formula Nitro

  • Municipal wastewater often contains nitrogen, mainly as ammonia, which secondary treatment processes usually do not remove. When released into lakes, streams, or estuaries, ammonia can increase biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) or trigger excessive algae growth. Additionally, ammonia in wastewater effluent can be harmful to aquatic life.

Additional biological processes beyond secondary treatment can assist in addressing this issue. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia into non-toxic nitrate through nitrification, reducing its toxic effects in the effluent. However, excess nitrate can still pose problems, as it can fuel uncontrolled algae growth. To counter this, the denitrification process transforms nitrate into nitrogen gas, which is harmlessly released into the atmosphere.

Formula Nitro introduces specialized bacterial strains that boost the existing microbial community in wastewater. These bacteria help significantly reduce ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, enhancing the overall quality of treated effluent and making it safer for environmental discharge.

Using Formula Nitro

  • Dosing Schedule:

    Flow Rate Initial Dosage Maintenance**
Up to 5,000 GPD ½ quart per day for 2 days 1 quart per week
Up to 50,000 GPD 2 quarts* (over 10 days) 2 quarts per week
Up to 250,000 GPD 1 gallon* (over 10 days) 1 quart per day
Up to 500,000 GPD 1 ½ gallons* (over 10 days) 1 quart per day
Up to 1 MGD 2 ½ gallons* (over 10 days) 1 quart per day
Up to 5 MGD 2 gallons per MGD* (over 10 days) 1 quart per day
Up to 12 MGD 2 gallons per MGD* (over 10 days) 2 quarts per MGD per day
Up to 100 MGD 2 gallons per MGD* (over 10 days) 1 gallon per MGD per day

    * Spread this initial dosage out over the course of 10 days.
** Add as regularly as possible. If a day is missed, add that day’s product with the next dosage.

Dosage rate will vary with flow rates, retention times, and system variations. Avoid adding to the treatment system at locations with toxic or otherwise adverse pH, DO, or temperature conditions at peak levels.

For optimal results, the wastewater and treatment system should meet the following conditions:

    Optimum Minimum
    Influent pH 7.0 5.0
    Dissolved Oxygen, ppm 2.0+ 1.0+
    C/N/P Ratio 100/10/1 100/5/1
    Temperature, °C 30° (86° F) 10° (50° F)
Toxic Metals, ppm (e.g., hex. chromium) 0 0

See label and SDS for safety information.
